But I'd reccomend the already mentioned Operational Art of War 4 as an easier to get to alternative.īesides, for OAoW there is a multitude of scenarios covering different time periods in different scales, whereas Grigsby's games focus mostly on those grand scenarios, and that can be daunting for some people ( War in the West has some smaller scale scenarios, though). They are a good recommendation, but you have to bear in mind, that they are games focusing on tactics. Graviteam Tactics (and Mius Front) is not phase based - it's real time (with pause), but there is separate turn based strategic layer. China is actually a massive pain in the ass for Japan that refuses to die, and takes about as long to wipe out as USSR did, US WILL actually D-Day you, even multiple times, if you don't defend the french coast, Italy's adventures in North Africa and Mediterranean go about as well as you'd expect and they do need the afrika corps something fierce, not to mention the supply issues. Invading USSR is an incredibly painful slog (just like it should be) with them throwing ridiculous and seemingly neverending stream of divisions at you until the bitter end (and you'll be hard pressed to take it over before 1945).

Invading GB is actually difficult as fuck and destined to failure before 1941 because of their air and naval dominance and many of their troops still lingering in Britain instead of already having died in some distant theatre. It's not railroaded or anything, but balanced just so that ww2 actually takes the historical course naturally. It's simpler than many other wargames (though more complex than Order of Battle), but it's got the best ww2 simulation I've ever encountered.
